Why learn word roots?

Researchers estimate that more than half of English vocabulary comes from Latin and Greek. Learning a single root such as port (“to carry”) helps you decode dozens of words—import, export, portable, transport—and even make educated guesses about words you have never seen. That is why roots are one of the most powerful vocabulary-building strategies for ESL students and native speakers alike.
