The research is more nuanced — and more encouraging — than popular mythology suggests. Adults are not bad language learners. They are different language learners.
Walk into any bookshop's language learning section and you will find a genre of optimistic self-help: "Fluent in 3 Months," "Learn Any Language in 30 Days," "The Secret the Language Schools Don't Want You to Know." The internet has its own parallel universe of polyglot YouTube channels where cheerful young men flip between a dozen languages with apparent effortlessness. Then there is the opposite mythology — embodied in the phrase every adult learner has heard at least once: "You know, you really should have started as a child."
Both mythologies distort a genuinely interesting scientific picture. Adults can learn languages — fluently, grammatically, even with near-native accents in some cases. Adults learn vocabulary faster than children do in the early stages. Adults understand grammar explanations and can make use of them in ways children cannot. But adults face real challenges that children don't: the critical period effects on phonology are genuine; the neural plasticity that makes childhood acquisition so frictionless has partially closed; and the competing demands on adult time and attention are formidable.
What follows is what the science actually shows — stripped of the sales pitch on one side and the defeatism on the other.
The US Foreign Service Institute, which trains diplomats to functional professional proficiency, has published the most systematic data we have on how long it takes adult English speakers to learn various languages. These estimates assume 25–30 hours of class time per week, experienced teachers, motivated students, and a reasonably structured curriculum — conditions more intensive than most people can sustain.
The categories are based on linguistic distance from English: how different the phonology, grammar, script, and vocabulary are from what an adult English speaker already knows. Understanding where your target language sits gives you a realistic foundation for planning rather than wishful thinking.

At 1 hour of daily focused study, Category I takes roughly 2 years; Category IV takes 6+ years. These are lower bounds for structured, high-quality study — casual app usage will take much longer.
One important nuance: the FSI ratings measure spoken/written proficiency for diplomatic work. Reading comprehension, passive vocabulary, and understanding native-speed media typically take longer. And these averages say nothing about an individual learner's background — a Spanish speaker learning Italian will hit Category I far faster than an English speaker will, because the starting point is closer.
One of the most common sources of frustration and miscommunication in adult language learning is undefined expectations around the word "fluency." Fluency for a backpacker means something completely different from fluency for a novelist or a diplomat. The Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) provides the most widely adopted international standard for defining competence levels, used by universities, employers, and language exams worldwide.
Most B2 speakers can handle everyday life, work, and social situations without strain. C1 handles professional demands. C2 is rarely required outside of academic or literary contexts. Setting B2 as your "fluency" target is both achievable and practically sufficient for most purposes.
The reason this matters for adult learners is that progress through these levels is not linear. Moving from A1 to B1 typically takes less time than moving from B1 to C1, because the low-frequency vocabulary and idiomatic complexity that separate intermediate from advanced learners is vast and largely acquired through extensive reading and listening rather than structured study. Many adult learners plateau at B1–B2 precisely because they exhaust their structured learning resources without transitioning to the massive amounts of authentic input needed to push further.
In the early 1980s, applied linguist Stephen Krashen proposed the most influential — and controversial — theory of second language acquisition. The core claim of his Input Hypothesis was elegantly simple: language is acquired, not learned. Conscious grammar study produces explicit knowledge that is almost entirely separate from the implicit communicative competence that allows fluent spontaneous speech. Real acquisition happens only when a learner encounters comprehensible input: language that is one step above their current level (the famous "i+1" formula), in a low-anxiety environment.
The practical implications were radical. Krashen argued that grammar drills, explicit error correction, and conscious study of rules contribute little or nothing to actual fluency. What matters is a flood of meaningful, comprehensible input: books, films, conversations, podcasts — anything that exposes the learner to the target language in context, at a level they can mostly understand with a reasonable stretch.
Four decades of research have both supported and complicated this picture. The value of comprehensible input is genuine and well-established: learners who read and listen extensively in their target language make consistent gains across all proficiency dimensions. But the claim that explicit instruction is useless has not held up. Norris and Ortega's 2000 meta-analysis of 49 studies found clear advantages for form-focused instruction, particularly for grammar forms that learners might otherwise miss in natural input. And researchers like Merrill Swain have documented the importance of pushed output — being required to produce the language at the edge of your competence, not just receive it — for developing grammatical accuracy and fluency.
The current consensus is something like: comprehensible input is the engine of acquisition, but output and feedback are the steering wheel and brakes. All three are necessary for efficient progress.
The adults-versus-children comparison is more nuanced than the popular mythology suggests. In some important respects, adults are actually better language learners than children — at least in the short and medium term. In other respects, the critical period effects are real and consequential. Understanding where your advantages and disadvantages lie allows you to compensate strategically.

The biggest practical implication: adults should lean into their advantages (metacognition, motivation, L1 literacy, semantic memory) while actively managing their disadvantages (time scarcity, inhibition, accent fossilization). For phonology specifically, the earlier you address pronunciation — ideally in the first 6–12 months — the better your chances of approaching native-like speech. The longer you allow incorrect phoneme categories to fossilize, the harder they become to undo.
One of the most useful mental models for adult language learners is thinking in hours, not weeks or months. A "year of Spanish" means nothing if you spent 10 minutes per day on a phone app. But 600 hours is concrete: it is the FSI estimate for reaching B2 in a Romance language.
These are rough estimates assuming efficient, varied study (not passive app use). Actual time varies significantly by learner background, teaching quality, and how "B2" is defined.
The takeaway is not that more hours is always better, but that consistency matters more than intensity. Research on skill acquisition consistently finds that distributed practice — shorter sessions over more days — produces better long-term retention than massed practice (cramming). This is exactly what spaced repetition systems exploit. An hour per day for three years produces more durable learning than three hours per day for one year, even if the total hour counts are similar.
A useful data source for adult language learning — not peer-reviewed science, but rich observational data — is the polyglot community: people who have acquired four, five, ten, or more languages as adults. Their methods vary widely, but several patterns emerge consistently from interviews, blogs, and case studies.
Despite their different methods, nearly all successful polyglots share a few common traits: consistency (they study every day), high input volume (they read and listen vastly more than average learners), tolerance for ambiguity (they accept not understanding everything and continue anyway), and genuine curiosity about the languages and cultures involved. The method matters less than these dispositional factors.
